The KM Counselling Approach

At KM Counselling you will work with a registered psychologist committed to ensuring that the therapy process is authentic, collaborative, and professional. This means that every individual counselling session should feel safe to explore the things that may not always be easy to talk about. Additionally, you will be an active participant in the process working together with the psychologist to create your goals and individualized treatment plan. At KM Counselling, we believe that you are the expert in your own life and working together to identify your strengths and challenges are how we can tailor an evidence-based treatment plan just for you.

On the day of your appointment, it can be helpful to arrive a couple minutes before your scheduled appointment time.

3) Attending your first appointment

At your first session, you will meet the psychologist and spend time discussing the consent form and the informed consent process. The first session is also when you get to share with the psychologist about yourself and what brought you to counselling. The psychologist will ask questions to best understand you and your situation, and you will be able to ask the psychologist any questions you may have. This first session is also when you will start to explore your goals for counselling.

At the end of the first session, you should have:

  • Learned about the consent process and provided informed consent
  • Discussed what brought you into counselling
  • Learned about the counselling process and started to explore your goals
  • Clarity on your next steps

Building Your Tailored Plan Starts at The First Appointment

KM Counselling strongly believes that the counselling approach that works best is the one that is tailored specifically for you. To find the approach that is best suited for you, the psychologist will ask you several questions. Some of the questions you may be asked during your first appointment are outlined below:

1. What brings you to counselling today?

The psychologist will want to best understand what issues you are seeking support for and why you think counselling may be helpful at this stage.

2. Have you been to counselling before?

This question helps the psychologist better understand what you know about the counselling process and what your experience in counselling was like. By helping the psychologist better understand your past therapy experiences the psychologist can better tailor their approach to meet your needs.

3. What are your hopes and/or goals from counselling?

This question helps the psychologist develop a treatment plan that is directly tailored to your hopes and goals and helps the psychologist evaluate treatment success. Understanding your counselling goals also allows the psychologist to find appropriate referrals for you if your counselling goals are out of the psychologist’s scope of practice.

4. What is working well right now and what are your strengths?

By understanding the areas of your life that are functioning well and the things that you see as your areas of strength, the psychologist can help you adapt your strengths in new ways to meet your counselling goals. Additionally, this information helps the psychologist understand what coping tools may work best for you to manage your stressors.

Questions you May Have Before the First Appointment

1. How many sessions will I need?

The number of counselling sessions required varies for each individual and depends on several factors including your current symptoms/issues that are present, your treatment goals, and your past and current life circumstances.

For simple cases, counselling may only require a few sessions and in complex cases, counselling can require 20+ sessions. Most people find they fall somewhere in-between.  After completing an initial assessment with you, the psychologist will be able to provide you with a better idea of how many sessions you may need.

2. What should I look for in a therapist?

Choosing the right psychologist in Calgary can seem overwhelming. However, there are a few important elements to look for when making your choice.

First, and most important – a good therapist will help you feel comfortable, safe, and heard.  A good therapist will also be genuine with you meaning that they do not try to be perfect, rather they try to be authentic. These elements are important in helping to foster meaningful change.

Second – a good therapist will be professional, meaning that they are skilled in treating the issues that you are coming to counselling for and are using evidence-based treatments with confidence. At KM Counselling you will work with a registered psychologist who has received master’s level training in addition to provincial accreditation, and addition to ongoing professional development training.

Third – Your therapist should take a collaborative, client-centred approach to counselling where you are involved in the development of your therapy goals and treatment plan. This means that should not feel like the therapist is pushing their own agenda in counselling and you feel in the loop throughout the entire process.

3. Can you give me a diagnosis?

At KM Counselling, you will work with a registered psychologist who can conduct general mental health assessments and can provide a mental health diagnosis. However, KM Counselling does not conduct formal psychological assessments at this time.

You may have other questions prior to your first counselling appointment and can find additional frequently asked questions about counselling here.

Many issues that people seek counselling for are often not easy to talk about. That is why KM Counselling strives to create a safe and empathic space where you can talk about the hard things with a registered psychologist who will tailor a counselling approach specific to your unique needs.

No matter what issues you are seeking support to address, KM Counselling is here to help explore the issues most important to you. Don’t wait to experience meaningful, lasting change.
