Reconnect with couples counselling
Located in the northwest community of Varsity, Calgary’s KM Counselling helps couples experiencing a variety of concerns learn how to reconnect. At KM Counselling, we offer caring and cooperative couples counselling to help partners build their relationship, talk to each other better, and work through problems together. Our trained psychologists are here to help both of you in a safe, respectful setting, whether you are having the same problems over and over again, trying to develop trust again, or just want to become closer.
We know that every relationship is different, so we customize our couples therapy to meet your needs and goals. Our psychologists employ evidence-based methods, including Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and the Gottman Method, to help couples find patterns, understand each other better, and learn healthier ways to interact with each other.
At KM Counselling, we want to help all kinds of relationships; thus, our couples counselling is open and accepting. We provide daytime, evening, and virtual appointments to meet your schedules and help you grow as a pair. Our team is here for you, no matter how long you’ve been together or how new your relationship is.

The KM Counselling Approach to Working with Couples
When couples seek counselling, their issues have often been present for quite some time, and people have often tried solving their issues without much success. As a result, many couples come into the counselling process already feeling disconnected with a lowered sense of hope for the success of the relationship. This is why KM Counselling encourages couples to consider counselling early. Just like supporting our physical health, prevention and early treatment is often the most helpful in supporting the health of our relationships.
Common topics that couples seek counselling support for include:
- Communication Issues
- Parenting Challenges
- Physical and Emotional Intimacy
- Trust
- Conflict management
- Life Transitions
- Extended Family Relationships

Is Couples Counselling Right for Us
Couples counselling can be beneficial for many types of relationships, whether you are in a same-sex relationship, blended family, dating or married. Regardless of your relationship type, before deciding to attend couples counseling, many people wonder if it will help their relationships improve. To better assess your readiness for couples counselling, you may find it helpful to ask yourself a few questions:
1) Am I open to working on the relationship?
2) Am I open to taking responsibility for my role in the relationship?
3) Do I have hope for the relationship?
4) Am I open to receiving feedback?
5) Am I open to talking about the relationship and the issues I see in a respectful way?
Couples counselling may not be appropriate under the following circumstances:
1) When the issue a couple is seeking counselling for is specifically related to an individual
2) When there is abuse/domestic violence present in the relationship
3) When one person in the relationship is not open to couples counselling and is not open
to work on the relationship

Frequently Asked Questions about Couples Counselling
1) How long are couples counselling appointments?
The first appointment you have with the therapist as a couple will typically be 50 minutes. From there, couples counselling sessions typically last either 50 minutes or 75 minutes.
2) Are couples counselling sessions the same fee as individual counselling sessions?
Yes! Counselling fees vary according to the length of a counselling appointment and are not based on the number of people attending. You can find out more about the rates for counselling services and payment information on our fees page
3) What if my partner will not attend counselling with me?
Sometimes one partner in a relationship is not ready to attend counselling as a couple. Fortunately, one partner can make a positive difference in the relationship by attending counselling individually with a focus on what their own role is within the relationship. Starting the process of individual growth may also have the potential to inspire your partner to engage in counselling for themselves.
You may have more questions prior to your first appointment and can find additional information on our FAQ page
Couples seek counselling for many issues that are often not easy to talk about. That is why KM Counselling strives to create a safe and empathic space where you can talk about the hard things with a registered psychologist who will tailor a counselling approach specific to the unique needs of you and your partner.
