Self-Esteem Counselling – Calgary NW

At KM Counselling, we know that a significant number of people experience low self-esteem, and some populations may be more prone to low self-esteem, including adolescents and girls (Statistics Canada, 2017). Because low self-esteem can significantly impact how you experience yourself and the world around you, our psychologists don’t treat self-esteem as a surface-level issue. Instead, we recognize it as a complex and meaningful part of your emotional well-being. That is why we take a thoughtful and evidence-based approach to self-esteem counselling that is grounded in empathy and clinical expertise.

Your KM Counselling Registered Provisional Psychologist, Alexandra Brad, has a passion for working with both adolescents and adults who want to build their self-esteem. Alexandra brings a warm, genuine and client-centred approach to self-esteem counselling. Alexandra takes her time to truly understand your strengths and challenges so that together you can build a more confident and compassionate view of yourself.

Our approach to self-esteem counselling focuses on identifying unhelpful core beliefs, strengthening self-compassion, and developing practical strategies to build confidence and resilience. We work collaboratively with you to explore the root causes of low self-esteem and support meaningful, lasting change.

KM Counselling Treatment for Low Self-Esteem

Alexandra Brad has a successful track record of helping treat symptoms of low self-esteem, including helping clients improve negative self-talk, fears of failure, perfectionism, poor boundaries, and more.

At the onset of counselling with Alexandra, she will take the time to understand your unique story, including any past experiences or beliefs that may be contributing to low self-esteem. From there, she will work together with you to identify your inner critic, challenge unhelpful thought patterns, and strengthen your self-compassion and self-acceptance.

Alexandra uses evidence-based therapies including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), and strengths-based approaches to help you develop healthier ways of thinking about yourself. As therapy continues, you’ll gain practical tools to navigate life with greater confidence.

What is Self-Esteem

Self-esteem is the way we view and value ourselves. It is our internal sense of worth- how much we believe we matter, are capable, and deserve love and respect. Healthy self-esteem does not always mean feeling confident or never having doubts about yourself. Healthy self-esteem means having a compassionate and balanced view of yourself, especially on the hard days.

Low self-esteem often develops over time and can be shaped by early life experiences, relationships, societal pressures or unresolved emotions. Low self-esteem can show up in many different ways and often affects more areas of life than people realize.

Some common types of low self-esteem include:

  • Social self-esteem: feeling inadequate in comparison to others or unworthy
  • Performance-based self-esteem: tying your self-worth to your achievements or productivity
  • Body image-related self-esteem: struggling with negative thoughts about your physical appearance

Symptoms of low self-esteem may include:

  • Second-guessing your decisions
  • Struggling to accept compliments or positive feedback
  • Feeling like you’re “not good enough”
  • Engaging in negative self-talk or have a harsh inner critic
  • Perfectionism: holding yourself to impossibly high standards
  • Difficulty setting boundaries
  • Over-apologising even when it is not necessary out of guilt
  • People pleasing: putting other’s needs ahead of your own out of fear of rejection

If any of these symptoms resonate with you, know that you’re not alone—and that change is possible. Our psychologists are here to support you in building self-worth, self-compassion, and a more confident foundation for your life.

Is counselling for low self-esteem effective?

Yes—counselling for low self-esteem can be highly effective. Many people find that working with a registered psychologist helps them uncover the negative beliefs they hold about themselves and shift unhelpful thinking patterns. Counselling can help you build a more confident and compassionate relationship with yourself.

How long does counselling take to improve self-esteem?

The timeline for building self-esteem through counselling varies for each person, depending on your unique experiences, goals, and readiness for change. Some clients begin to notice small but meaningful shifts—such as reduced self-criticism or increased self-awareness—within just a few sessions. For others, it may take a little more time as we work together to unpack deeper patterns, develop new skills, and strengthen your self-worth from the inside out.
