NW Calgary Burnout Counselling
We do not take a one-size-fits all approach to therapy because we know that everyone’s path to healing and optimal wellbeing is unique. That is why when it comes to treating burnout, our counselling psychologists work collaboratively with you to understand the root cause of your burnout and develop tailored strategies that help to restore your energy and overall wellbeing.

Our experienced psychologists know that a significant number of Calgarians experience burnout. In fact, a 2024 study found that one in four (24%) working Canadians reported experiencing symptoms of burnout “most of the time” (Pollara Strategic Insights, 2024). In addition to burnout from work, people can experience burnout from other sources as well, and symptoms of burnout do not typically resolve on their own.

Customized Burnout Treatment Plans

Our psychologists have a strong track record of successfully treating various types of burnout. This includes supporting healthcare providers and first responders during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, working with caregivers of aging parents or those navigating new parenthood, and helping busy professionals manage work-related stress across Calgary’s education, oil and gas, and corporate sectors.

When you come to KM Counselling for burnout therapy, your psychologist will begin with a personalized assessment to better understand your specific symptoms, the factors contributing to your burnout, and what strategies you’ve already tried. From there, a therapy plan that is customized to meet your unique goals and needs will be collaboratively developed. Every therapy plan includes evidence-based approaches that may provide stress management support, boundary-setting support, and other practical tools to help restore your physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing. Our trained psychologists use evidence-based approaches such as cognitive-behavioural therapy, solution-focused therapy, and emotion-focused therapy. Because burnout can often involve a loss of purpose or direction, we also work with you to explore your core values and develop strategies that help you realign your life in a way that feels both authentic and sustainable.

Our psychologists will work collaboratively with you throughout the therapy process to ensure it remains a good fit, and can adapt to any changes that arise, such as shifts in your health or employment status.

Burnout counselling that is safe and non-judgmental
We provide a safe and non-judgemental space where you can feel supported and empowered to move forward in positive ways. Burnout recovery is possible, and the trusted support of the psychologists at KM Counselling are here to help.

What can cause burnout

When we experience an increase in pressure or demands in our daily life from things like work, family life, or health issues it can have a negative impact on our mental and physical health. When people experience unresolved, prolonged periods of stress, burnout can occur.

Burnout can come from many different sources of stress. Some common sources of stress that can cause burnout include:

What is Burnout?

What to do if you have symptoms of burnout

If you are experiencing symptoms of burnout, it is important to create a plan to address it before it causes more serious problems such as depression or anxiety. Several things you can do on your own to manage symptoms of burnout include:

  1. Identifying your stress triggers.
  2. Identifying your coping tools that you find helpful.
  3. Using calming strategies like deep breathing and guided meditation.
  4. Making small changes to your daily routine by focusing on building in breaks for rest, meals, and physical activity.
  5. Connecting with your support network to share how you have been feeling.

If you have been struggling to manage your stress or burnout on your own, therapy with a registered psychologist can help you learn effective tools and strategies to get back to feeling better.

Burnout often doesn’t arrive alone, it can show up alongside depression, anxiety, and the weight of unresolved trauma or grief. You might find that relationships feel strained, work feels overwhelming, or that your usual confidence and self-esteem have taken a hit. For some, burnout is rooted in the challenge of balancing parenting or supporting children while navigating their own emotional exhaustion. Whatever the path that’s brought you here, we understand how burnout can touch every part of life. In therapy, we work together to identify what’s contributing to your burnout and help you reconnect with what matters most.

If you have been struggling to manage burnout on your own, therapy with a registered psychologist can help you learn effective tools and strategies to get back to feeling better.
